Original binding, with gilt title laid on spine. Binding showing loss at corners, and rubbing on spine and boards. Internally missing half-title page, fep worn. Contemporary owners' name and 1808 on title page, later name on fep. Some light foxing to early pages, but otherwise this is internally an excellent copy, tight and clean. Hannah Glasse's book, the best-known English cookery book of the 18th century, first appeared in 1747. Immensely popular, it went into many editions. A good deal is now known about Mrs Glasse, who wrote her book from necessity, since her husband seems to have been unable to support her and their large family.
