Rebound in modern half-calf with marbled boards. Title page corners are shabby and a dozen following have dog-ears. Occasional rust stains, watermark. Remnants of insect damage affect a small section of pp 167 - 176. First published in 1695 by W.H, in this Third Edition William Salmon gives himself the title of Professor of Physic, although some writers suggest he was only a well-read quack. This lovely example of the household companion is a wealth of information for "Ladies, Gentlewomen and such other Persons, whose Station requires their taking care of the House." It contains instructions on the Preparation of Medecines as well as for "The Dressing of Food or Meats for conservation of the strength of the Body" and, the author claims " contains the best Receipts for Cookery that are Extant" . The alphabetical arrangement of the text means that the medical remedies are interspersed with the recipes, so that for example instructions for baking a Loin of Veal are followed by remedies for Looseness of the bowel!
