7 My Daily Dinner Cookery Book The work of a practical housewife. Unique in the history of cookery books.
Melbourne Southdown Press N.d.(c. 1940s) 4th edition Pictorial Stapled Wraps Fair
Wrap covers detached from contents and repaired along spine. Some minor stains to wraps, contents very clean. Edited by K.Balfour, this aims "to provide the young housekeeper with a fundamental knowledge of cookery." Very interesting to study the menus. A summer Monday offering is cold lamb, jellied beetroot, mashed or new potatoes, followed by blancmange with jam. Things look up on a winter Sunday with roast fowl, boiled pork or bacon, cauliflower, bread sauce and mashed potatoes (rather a white dinner), followed by orange snow. Ms Balfour's best advice? "READ (your) cookery books, and not just use them for one or two special recipes that take your fancy" Lovely edition of this work.
Price: 15.00 AUD

Australia Department of Labour & National Service 1957 4th edition Hardcover Very Good
Occasional stains and light soiling of covers, otherwise a fresh, clean and tight copy Published for use in government hostels, camps, hospitals and so on, this gives a somewhat sobering picture of institutional eating forty years ago. However it remains in high demand, particularly with those catering for workers in Australia's remote areas where hearty and traditional food is as important and popular as it was when first published in 1942. A scarce item, particularly in this condition

16 "Viola" The Leader Spare Corner Book Part VII. For Australian Women. A uique collection of home and household hints and kitchen recipes.
Melbourne "The Leader" & "The Age" 1935 Pictorial wrappers Fair
Insect damage to spine and edges of front & rear covers. The book is no longer stapled and therefore does not hold together. Rust stains from staples carry through the centre of the book. Contents are good and unmarked. The Spare Corner, begun in 1927 was soon a popular feature for women readers of "The Leader" newspaper. The first booklet of selections from this page of correspondence, advice, recipes, patterns and so on was issued in 1929 and later issued in three parts bound as one, to be followed by a second containing parts four, five and six. A fascinating collection, since these were readers' favourite recipes, home remedies and household hints. Enjoyable advertisements, too.
