D/w is tatty at the edges, with some foxing to the folds, which is also evident on the edges of the text block. Some offset on eps, but contents are clean and binding tight. With all of Heath's usual style, this book was originally written in 1945, but publication was postponed because of the austerity of post-war Britain. His hopeful tone here "reminds us how to prepare the good and pleasant food which has for so long been absent from our table." although he also apologises teasingly for the presence of such "highly creamy dishes as the beans landaise on page 91, the cucumber (p.94), the delicious trout Normande and the truly exquisite smoked salmon tart (p.54)...However by the time these words appear in print, cream may be with us again. Excellent recipes. Scarce

Original leather rebacked (not recently)with spine laid down. Binding a little worn, with edgewear to extremities,but binding sound. Contents are v.good with the exception of occasional light rust marks. The top 5cm of ffep is loose and one section (around recipe 574) is slightly loose, but secure. A nice copy. Probably the best of the early Australian cookery books. Hannah Maclurcan, nee Phillips, at 17 was managing the Club Hotel at Toowoomba for her father, and after her marriage, the Queen's Hotel at Townsville. Later she presided over the old Wentworth Hotel in Sydney, which had a reputation for its fine food and general tone. Her recipes, which often make use of local fruits, game and seafood, are excellent, and her instructions precise and practical. The first edition of this important work was published earlier the same year as this, the second. Scarce.

The Electrical Association for Women was formed "for the purpose of imparting Electrical education in the safe and correct uses and the advantages of using electrical appliances". The Association's Clubrooms and demonstration kitchen were at 9 Clarence Street, Sydney, and free advice was offered to anyone "with an electrical problem". Membership cost two shillings a year and women were urged to join and make friends with a "happy band of electrically-minded women". The book has a wide range of recipes from cheese straws to mulberry jelly. Illustrations include some showing the correct way to use a vacuum cleaner.

8vo. iv + pp.384 + index. Original calf rebacked. Wear to extremities. Front and back hinge recently repaired. Internally tight and clean with scattered foxing and occasional stain. An important work, first published 1769. Mrs Raffald was housekeeper to Lady Elizabeth Warburton, at Arley Hall, Cheshire. She later married the head gardener there and the couple moved to Manchester, where she set up a registry office for domestic servants, which she ran in conjunction with her cooked meat and confectioner's shop. Business was brisk and larger premises were soon needed. In spite of continual pregnancies - she had sixteen daughters - she somehow found time to write her immensely popular cookery book, full of delicious recipes, though, according to Quayle, she never parted with the recipe for her famous brawn, "a delicacy she sold sliced by the pound, and which had customers throughout the length and breadth of Lancashire". Title page notes that "No book is genuine but what is signed by the Author" as this is on page 1.

Professionally rebacked with new endpapers and original spine laid down. Contents are internally clean and binding is now sound, although some sections are offset and several showing edgewear from when the book was previously loosely bound. Mrs Maria Eliza Rundell published her famous work in 1806. It was the earliest and most popular household manual of the 19th century, going into about 70 editions. Oxford cites a 65th edition in 1841 with an amended form appearing as late as 1893, so this one is probably the 66th. The recipes are very interesting indeed. Pickled oysters,braised chickens (with bacon, herbs, stock and sherry), roast onions and coffee cream ("observe that your coffee be fresh") are some appealing ones. The book includes cookery for the poor, household recipes, and menus.

Rebound in modern half-calf with marbled boards. Title page corners are shabby and a dozen following have dog-ears. Occasional rust stains,watermark. Remnants of insect damage affect a small section of pp 167 - 176. First published in 1695 by W.H, in this Third Edition William Salmon gives himself the title of Professor of Physic, although some writers suggest he was only a well-read quack. This lovely example of the household companion is a wealth of information for "Ladies, Gentlewomen and such other Persons, whose Station requires their taking care of the House." It contains instructions on the Preparation of Medecines as well as for "The Dressing of Food or Meats for conservation of the strength of the Body" and, the author claims " contains the best Receipts for Cookery that are Extant" . The alphabetical arrangement of the text means that the medical remedies are interspersed with the recipes, so that for example instructions for baking a Loin of Veal are followed by remedies for Looseness of the bowel!

Waldo Lincoln bookplate on inside front cover dated September 30 1929. Text marked and foxed in places. Hinges repaired and minor repairs to other pages. Boards rubbed and stubbed, worn original full leather with five bands to spine. First published 1727, and one of the best known of the 18th century cookery books, going in to 18 editions. It was also the first cookbook to be published in the United States (1742). Not much is known about Eliza Smith beyond her own preface statement that for over 30 years she had been employed "in fashionable and noble Families". The recipes are full of interest, as indeed are the many rather horrendous remedies and cures.

Envelope pasted on to rear ep with a newspaper cutting of recipes for paperbag cooking as well as a leaflet stating "These are the only bags approved by Monsieur Soyer..." Webbing showing at rear hinge, otherwise a clean tight copy. The author, late chef of Brook's Club, did not claim to be able to cook everything in a paper-bag but his enthusiasm is pretty infectious. An immensely popular work, this little book went into three editions in 51 days (Bitting, Driver). This appears to be the first American edition.

Inscription on ffep Nicolas Soyer, late Chef of Brooks's Club, was the grandson of the great Alexis Soyer. He, like his grandfather, was originally destined for the Church, but left it to serve under Papon, the famous confectioner. On coming to London he worked in various large kitchens before a succession of posts as chef in aristocratic households. This extensive work includes some of the recipes from his successful "Paper-Bag Cookery". Interesting sections on how to make colourings and essences, dishes made with cereals, various fruit beverages and sound advice on coffee and chocolate.

Original green boards with gilt tile on spine and front. Decoratve endpapers. pp.242. Boards are lightly soiled and showing edgewear to extremities. Internally there is some light foxing to early pages, but otheriwse a clean and tight copy. The Colonel's style is authoritative - and addictive. His asides, which provide splendid glimpses of life under the British Raj, are as interesting as his recipes, which range from hors d'oevres and savoury toasts to curries, galantines and puddings. The chapter on camp cookery - "tinned Australian,and other preserved lumps of meat, are valuable additions to the store box of the jungle-wallah" - is particularly enjoyable. Scarce.

4to. pp 94. Spine is split and torn at rear, loss to head and foot of spine. Internally very clean and bright. Now protected in removable mylar cover. Scarce first edition. Six members, and never more than six at one time, comprised the Society of Gourmets who produced this book, for which the proceeds went to Torchbearers for Legacy. The Society met in Sydney on the final Wednesday of each month for lunch or dinner. Included is a Molnar sketch book which records bits of a vanished Sydney among other things. Interesting social history - and some excellent recipes.
