Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book A Collection of Practical Recipes specially suitable for Australia, Maclurcan, Hannah
1 Maclurcan, Hannah Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book A Collection of Practical Recipes specially suitable for Australia
Townsville Publ. by the author & printed by T.Willmett & Sons 1898 2nd Ed. Original Cloth Good
Original leather rebacked (not recently)with spine laid down. Binding a little worn, with edgewear to extremities, but binding sound. Contents are v.good with the exception of occasional light rust marks. The top 5cm of ffep is loose and one section (around recipe 574) is slightly loose, but secure. A nice copy. Probably the best of the early Australian cookery books. Hannah Maclurcan, nee Phillips, at 17 was managing the Club Hotel at Toowoomba for her father, and after her marriage, the Queen's Hotel at Townsville. Later she presided over the old Wentworth Hotel in Sydney, which had a reputation for its fine food and general tone. Her recipes, which often make use of local fruits, game and seafood, are excellent, and her instructions precise and practical. The first edition of this important work was published earlier the same year as this, the second. Scarce.
Price: 600.00 AUD

2 Pearson, Miss (Margaret J.) Australian Cookery Recipes for the People As given at the Centennial Exhibition, Melbourne 1888-1889
Melbourne The Australiasian-American Trading Co. Limited 1889 Second edition Original Printed Boards Fair
Binding fragile and held with archival tape at front hinge. Ffep missing. Boards have some light stains. Internally this is a clean copy of a pioneering Australian cookbook. Scarce. Miss Pearson was a cookery instructress at the Working Men's College and other institutions in late 19th century Melbourne, having come from Scotland, where she was a superintendent and teacher of cookery. This 'Second Edition' is a follow-up to her 1888 'Cookery Recipes for the People' based upon her notes from teaching, but also (according to an extract from the Argus newspaper at rear) from the lessons she was giving in the Metropolitan Gas Company's Court at the Centennial Exhibition. "On Saturday afternoons Miss Pearson holds her class in the Education Court and her pupils are girls from ... 12 to 16". Advertisements on prelims show ornate gas stoves available from the afroesaid Metropolitan Gas Company, proving product placement and cross-promotion are not the exclusive preserve of the Masterchef era! This edition is not noted by Austin, although the 1894 3rd edition is.
Price: 200.00 AUD

3 Rutledge, Mrs Forster The Goulburn Cookery Book
NSW Facsimile by the National Trust of Australia 1973 40th Ed. Hardcover Good
First published 1899. In her preface Mrs Rutledge wrote that she felt her collection of recipes "will meet a want, especially among women in the bush, who have often to teach inexperienced maids". An Australian classic, hard to find in good condition, which makes this reproduction a good alternative.
Price: 30.00 AUD
