1 French Domestic Cookery combining elegance with economy; describing new culinary implements and processes; the management of the table; instructions for carving; French, German, Polish, Spanish and Italian Cookery in Twelve Hundred Receipts besides a variety of new modes of keeping and storing provisions. domestic hints,, &c, management of wines.
London David Bogue 1846 First edition (?) Original Cloth Good
Corners and head and foot of spine are bumped, spine is sun-faded as are edges, with possible watermark to front right edge. Internally, a split between pastedown and ffep has rendered the binding a little loose, although it is secure. Inscription to ffep. Pages are generally clean, although edge of text block is browned. In sum a good solid copy of a scarce volume. This appears to be the first English edition, a translation of "La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville; ou, Nouvelle Cuisine Economique" published also in 1846 in Paris. An 1846 American edition is cited in the Methodist Review of that year (in which the reviewer takes the publisher to task for including the sections on wines and asks for a teetotal edition). Bitting mentions that another English publication with the same title was published in 1825, but does not suggest a connection, although some sources cite it as first and this as second. Scarce.

5 Two 19TH Century Mss., One of Recipes the other a sort of commonplace book, including descriptions of boarding school life in Switzerland
Switzerland & UK (?) . c.1870- 1900 Good
covers worn, spines repaired, internally clean and tight The author of these interesting little works appears to be a Blanche Coumbe, who seems to have intended one of the exercise books to be a diary to be kept at her Swiss boarding school. Presumably some years later, for the handwriting is similar, if more mature, the empty book was used to write recipes in. These include Lemon Cheese cake (Mama's recipe), Cold Fig Pudding (Lady Bective) and French Potatoes, with some recipes at the end of the book attributed to the Daily Mail. The commonplace book describes the daily routine of Blanche's school near Neuchatel, the lesson timetable, meals, lists of pupils according to nationality, plus a number of verse extracts, several pages on "The Signification of Names", etc. etc.

Rebound (well but not recently) in sympathetic maroon leather, with title in gilt on front board. Internally clean and tight Miss Duckitt's book, first published 1891, was immensely successful, with editions appearing regularly until 1925, if not later. Regarded as the Mrs Beeton of South Africa, her cookery books introduced many to the culinary traditions of the "old Cape families of Dutch descent" who often had Malay and Indian cooks. Recipes for food, household items and remedies are all arranged alphabetically, which results in some interesting juxtapositions -e.g. claret cup followed by claret stains (to remove), A most enjoyable book.

19 Rundell, Maria A NEW SYSTEM OF DOMESTIC COOKERY Formed upon Principles of Economy, and adapted to the use of private families, By a Lady. With the addition of many new Receipts
London John Murray, Albermarle St 1845 Original Cloth Good
Professionally rebacked with new endpapers and original spine laid down. Contents are internally clean and binding is now sound, although some sections are offset and several showing edgewear from when the book was previously loosely bound. Mrs Maria Eliza Rundell published her famous work in 1806. It was the earliest and most popular household manual of the 19th century, going into about 70 editions. Oxford cites a 65th edition in 1841 with an amended form appearing as late as 1893, so this one is probably the 66th. The recipes are very interesting indeed. Pickled oysters, braised chickens (with bacon, herbs, stock and sherry), roast onions and coffee cream ("observe that your coffee be fresh") are some appealing ones. The book includes cookery for the poor, household recipes, and menus.

Internally there is some light foxing to early pages, but otheriwse a clean and tight copy. The Colonel's style is authoritative - and addictive. His asides, which provide splendid glimpses of life under the British Raj, are as interesting as his recipes, which range from hors d'oevres and savoury toasts to curries, galantines and puddings. The chapter on camp cookery - "tinned Australian, and other preserved lumps of meat, are valuable additions to the store box of the jungle-wallah" - is particularly enjoyable. Scarce.
