Sydney Angus & Robertson 1968 Reprt. Wraps Good
Front and rear covers lightly rubbed and with several creases. Foxing to outside edge of text block, but otherwise a very clean, secure copy. A considerable influence, probably, on hotel and institutional cooking in NSW. Baked rabbit, curried chops, boiled cabbage, stewed rhubarb and sago custard are typical of its untrendy fare. But there are many oldfashioned pleasures here, too; pea soup, scalloped oysters and queen pudding, for example.

10 "Viola" The Leader Spare Corner Book Part VII. For Australian Women. A uique collection of home and household hints and kitchen recipes.
Melbourne "The Leader" & "The Age" 1935 Pictorial wrappers Fair
Insect damage to spine and edges of front & rear covers. The book is no longer stapled and therefore does not hold together. Rust stains from staples carry through the centre of the book. Contents are good and unmarked. The Spare Corner, begun in 1927 was soon a popular feature for women readers of "The Leader" newspaper. The first booklet of selections from this page of correspondence, advice, recipes, patterns and so on was issued in 1929 and later issued in three parts bound as one, to be followed by a second containing parts four, five and six. A fascinating collection, since these were readers' favourite recipes, home remedies and household hints. Enjoyable advertisements, too.

Blue ink smear on top right-hand corner of cover. Internally very clean and bright Popular little book first issued in 1949 by the "Aerophos" manufacturers to promote their phosphate raising ingredients. Per Hoyle, this is probably one of the 1949 editions 20,000 each of which were published in August and October. 16 Maclurcan, Hannah Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book A Collection of Practical Recipes specially suitable for Australia
Townsville Publ. by the author & printed by T.Willmett & Sons 1898 2nd Ed. Original Cloth Good
Original leather rebacked (not recently)with spine laid down. Binding a little worn, with edgewear to extremities, but binding sound. Contents are v.good with the exception of occasional light rust marks. The top 5cm of ffep is loose and one section (around recipe 574) is slightly loose, but secure. A nice copy. Probably the best of the early Australian cookery books. Hannah Maclurcan, nee Phillips, at 17 was managing the Club Hotel at Toowoomba for her father, and after her marriage, the Queen's Hotel at Townsville. Later she presided over the old Wentworth Hotel in Sydney, which had a reputation for its fine food and general tone. Her recipes, which often make use of local fruits, game and seafood, are excellent, and her instructions precise and practical. The first edition of this important work was published earlier the same year as this, the second. Scarce.
