Corners and head and foot of spine are bumped, spine is sun-faded as are edges, with possible watermark to front right edge. Internally, a split between pastedown and ffep has rendered the binding a little loose, although it is secure. Inscription to ffep. Pages are generally clean, although edge of text block is browned. In sum a good solid copy of a scarce volume. This appears to be the first English edition, a translation of "La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville; ou, Nouvelle Cuisine Economique" published also in 1846 in Paris. An 1846 American edition is cited in the Methodist Review of that year (in which the reviewer takes the publisher to task for including the sections on wines and asks for a teetotal edition). Bitting mentions that another English publication with the same title was published in 1825, but does not suggest a connection, although some sources cite it as first and this as second. Scarce.

covers soiled but strong, contents v.good This companion to the immensely popular "Tasty Dishes", of which 100,000 copies had been printed, includes recipes for soups, fish, meat and poultry, with many for cakes and puddings. Invalid cookery is a special feature, while a miscellaneous section contains various potted meats, ginger beer, and, more unusually, dandelion beer. This, too, proved a popular work, going into seven editions.

One of the many revised Beeton books, this one published during wartime, still includes advice to the housewife from treatment of servants (although these are acknowledged to be scarce) to a daily routine (do mending jobs after lunch). 1200 recipes.

Wrap covers detached from contents and repaired along spine. Some minor stains to wraps, contents very clean. Edited by K.Balfour, this aims "to provide the young housekeeper with a fundamental knowledge of cookery." Very interesting to study the menus. A summer Monday offering is cold lamb, jellied beetroot, mashed or new potatoes, followed by blancmange with jam. Things look up on a winter Sunday with roast fowl, boiled pork or bacon, cauliflower, bread sauce and mashed potatoes (rather a white dinner), followed by orange snow. Ms Balfour's best advice? "READ (your) cookery books, and not just use them for one or two special recipes that take your fancy" Lovely edition of this work.

However it remains in high demand, particularly with those catering for workers in Australia's remote areas where hearty and traditional food is as important and popular as it was when first published in 1942. A scarce item, particularly in this condition
